Birthday Dinner

(189/366)

Tonight I flew home for Andrew’s birthday. Crazily enough, when I got to Baltimore, it was hotter here than it is in Florida. What the heck?

We got home a little on the late side, but Andrew had prepared an entire elaborate birthday dinner. The guy even made his own cake.

Funny story about cake and Andrew. I’ve never made Andrew a birthday cake. One time I made him a cookie cake for his birthday, but I’ve never made him a simmiecake. After the second year or so of not making him a birthday cake, I rather randomly declared that I wouldn’t make him a cake until the fifth birthday of his while we were together. Turns out that fifth birthday will be July 2013, about a month and a half after our wedding. When he realized this, Andrew said, “geez, I have to marry you to get a birthday cake?” which I suppose is true. But after discussing this with one of my coworkers, he pointed out that anniversaries start over when you get married. So it looks like Andrew will be getting a cake somewhere in the July 2018 timeframe.

But anyways…I got home and Andrew had prepared your traditional Korean Shabbat dinner. Pretty typical, right? He had marinated galbi all day, cooked up some rice, and gotten vegetables to prepare. While he was grilling the meat, I cooked up the spinach and bean sprouts. We also had the chance to finally try the kimchi I made two months ago. I must say, it’s pretty good. Tastes legit to me, and it’s the perfect amount of spicy. That, with a challah, some wine, and candles completed our Shabbat meal. Also, Andrew can now say the prayer over the wine in Hebrew by heart!

It’s only a quick trip home, but I’m so glad to be here. I didn’t realize just how much I missed this place until I walked in the door. It’s so much more comfortable and comforting here. This weekend has gotten off to a great start already.

Happy Birthday Andrew! I’m so glad to see you today!
