Olympic Fever (191/366)

Grips

(192/366)

Last week I watched the gymnastics trials for the US Olympic team and I’ve been swept away with Olympic fever. I LOVE the Olympics. I have to admit, I sort of lose track of the gymnastics goings-on in between Olympic years, so come the spring of the Olympic year I have to get caught up on who everyone is and the background stories and how everyone is doing. I’m pretty well caught up on the current women’s US Olympic team and I’m happy and excited about the selection. Three weeks until the Olympics!

In 2008 I was driving across the country with Melissa and Elise during the Olympics. We managed to catch the opening ceremonies in a random hotel restaurant in northeast Colorado, the women’s prelims in a bar in Utah, and the all around competition in a sports bar at the Grand Canyon.

This year I’ll be in Florida, giddily watching the Olympics while talking to Melissa on the phone in New Jersey and shrieking loud enough for Elise to hear in Chicago.

Of course, after watching all that gymnastics, I started to get the itch to tumble around a bit. I haven’t been in a gym for 2 or 3 years, but I know I can still do a backhandspring, and I’ve done some light tumbling not that long ago. I have a hunch I could pull off the second half of my bar routine once. Only once. Because then my hands are going to hurt and my shoulders and back are going to ache for days. But I’m pretty sure I can still do it. I found a local gym that holds open gym on the weekend and I think I’ve convinced someone to go with me. This is probably a bad idea. This is probably one of those situations where it would be better to walk away. But I’m delusional enough to give it a try. I’ll report back on Sunday with how I did. If I can still lift my arms to type.
