On the Ice at the Verizon Center

58/365

Our friend Rob is a season ticket holder for the Washington Capitals. One of the events the CAPS have been doing the past few years for season ticket holders is the chance to come to Verizon Center and skate on the ice. It’s a pretty cool little event. They break the ice time up into two sessions so it’s not too crowded and you can either bring your own skates or rent skates for free and skate around for about 40 minutes. This year, Rob invited me, Ryan, and Andrew to come check it out. We are clearly very excited about this.

Me and Slapshot

Turns out being able to roller skate is only marginally helpful when trying to ice skate. I could turn around and skate forwards but man on man, I’m so much more comfortable on four wheels now. As I was bracing the wall I told Andrew to take a picture of me and when I turned around, Slapshot was right there! How fortuitous. Also, the covers he has for his ice skates have little wheels on them so he can skate around when he’s not on ice. So clever.

Capitals Locker Room

Another part of the night was the chance to get to take a self-guided tour of the locker room. It was a lot smaller than I had imagined, but it was cool to see all the players names and numbers and where they sat. Not sure what Marcus Johansson did, but his locker is crammed in the corner of the room. I wanted to look around and see which player had the biggest head judging by his helmet, but we didn’t have enough time.

After that, they showed the away game of the CAPS vs. Panthers game on the jumbotron and gave away free hot dogs, soft drinks, and popcorn. I LOVE the Verizon Center popcorn so I got my fill while we waited in line for 30 minutes because they ran out of hot dogs. It was definitely a unique experience and a really fun time. So, thanks to Rob for inviting me!
