Fried Matzo

(98/366)

First off, I would like you to know that this is dedication. Not only was I in my pajamas, teeth brushed, and ready for bed, but I was all tucked in and the lights were out. I got out of my nice, cozy, warm bed to write this post. So appreciate it, darn you!

Today was really an excellent day. I woke up not too early, not too late and whipped up a batch of fried matzo (or matzo brie) for breakfast to kick off our Passover week of unleavened foodstuffs.

(As a side note, fried matzo is not a particularly photogenic dish. But I promise it tasted good!).

Egg Mixture

It’s pretty easy to make. First you make an egg mixture with some eggs and milk. Think French toast.

Then you take some pieces of matzo and run them under some running water to get them a little damp. You don’t want them soaking wet or anything, but you want just enough moisture that they get a teeny-tiny bit soft.

Eggy Matzo

Then, break up the matzo into smallish size pieces and dunk and mix them in the egg mixture. Drop that into a hot frying pan (I use a little butter too) and fry it up until the egg is fully cooked. I like my fried matzo a little dry and on the more-cooked, rather than soggy side. But I guess that’s a personal preference. I’ve always had mine savory as well, with a just a little bit of salt for flavor, but I’ve heard of people sprinkling it with cinnamon and sugar ala the aforementioned French toast route.

After a quick breakfast, we headed to temple for some services where Andrew partook in his first ever taste of gefilte fish. I’m not actually sure how he felt about it, but I don’t remember any conspicuous bites left on his plate, so I’m going to guess he thought it was palatable. Or he was just really hungry (which seems to be the perpetual case on Passover for me).

Then, after an afternoon of naps (for me) and naps and video games (for Andrew) we headed over to our first ever Freedom Seder down in Arlington. It was great! There were at least 30 people crammed into this one little apartment, but we had a great time! Our little end of the table had a great time discussing, science, immigration, swimsuits, economic policy, religion…we hit all the big ones. It was great to meet an awesomely diverse group of people and share and teach them about Passover. Big props to Aaron for his hosting!

Our big Passover Saturday ended up with us finally going to see The Hunger Games movie. We had both read the books and were looking forward to it. I thought the movie was good. I liked it exactly as much as I liked the books. In both cases there were things I liked and didn’t like, and neither of them exceeded my opinion of the other. Which isn’t to say that I didn’t enjoy it. I thought they did a great job capturing the feeling of the book.

Now I’m going to crawl back into my nice warm bed. Happy Easter peeps! (haha, peeps)
