Union Market

Union Market is this little food market is NE DC. It just opened up a couple of years ago, and once you go inside it’s a pleasant little surprise. It reminds me of a yuppier, smaller Eastern Market (also in DC), or a smaller, calmer, more diverse Eataly (in NYC).

On Friday evenings they do a drive-in. They project a movie onto the side of the building and you can either park you car and listen through the radio or bring some chairs or a blanket and hang out in the front of the lot.

Carhops

The DC Rollergirls are hanging around to act as carhops. We sell cookies and candy, do facepainting, and also try to sell some of the vendor’s food to people coming to watch. Last night the movie was Surf’s Up, so there were a ton of kids playing around. Most of them seemed to be quite interested in the fact that we were on skates and loved watching us skate around. It’s a great opportunity to tell people about roller derby and give them information to come to our bouts. One guy actually came up to me and was super surprised and excited to find out that roller derby is an actual thing and not just something he saw in a movie. Once you get talking, most people are pretty interested to hear what we have to say and tell us they’re going to come check out a bout. Let’s hope they do!
