Slipper Sock

Andrew has this habit of deciding he likes something and then that thing is completely unavailable. The guy doesn’t like suitcases with wheels. Do you know how hard it is to find a suitcase without wheels? It’s impossible. Because no one wants to lug around a heavy suitcase when they can much more easily drag it behind them on wheels. Except Andrew. And you know what? He has a suitcase without wheels. It’s a vintage suitcase I found a Goodwill. Because that’s the only place you can find a suitcase without wheels. Where people donate stuff they don’t want anymore because it’s old and outdated.

That being said, his desire for things that no long exist extends beyond just suitcases. Andrew has had the same pair of slippers for the past 15 years. Yes, FIFTEEN years. Over half his life. When he got those slippers, he was a freshman in high school. Y2K was thing. We were partying like it was 1999…because it was 1999.

But a few days ago, the slippers finally died. He’s been trying to keep them as long as possible, but at this point they have multiple holes in the soles and are fundamentally failing at what they’re supposed to do. His feet are no longer warm. So, on Wednesday he tossed them in the trash.

I have known about this slipper conundrum for a while, and as the holiday season has approached, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to find Andrew a replacement pair of slippers. But guess what? They don’t make them anymore. Slipper socks are no longer in style. Especially not fleece ones. Moccasins are in. Uggs are in (even for guys…so says Tom Brady and that’s one stylish man). But slipper socks? Impossible to find. (Of course).

So, after weeks of looking and finally giving up, I decided to try to make him new slipper socks. After lots of internet research and one failed attempt later, I realized I was on a fruitless journey to find a pattern to make him exactly what he had before. I had almost resigned myself to making Andrew some subpar slipper socks when it occurred to both of us that we had the pattern we needed right in front of us. Andrew fished his old slippers out of the trash, I tore them apart, and started again. Also, that is true love right there. Ripping apart a 15 year-old slipper sock at 11 PM. It wasn’t pretty.

As of right now, he has one new, half finished slipper sock. I’m going to call this project a success.
